PROFESSOR ISIEKWE DELIVERS 3RD INAUGURAL LECTURE OF THE UNIVERSITY OF LAGOS, DECEMBER 19!!

Professor Michael Chukwudi Isiekwe of the Department of Child Dental Health, Faculty of Dental Sciences in the College of Medicine, will deliver the 3 rd Inaugural Lecture of the University Of Lagos(UNILAG), in the 2012/2013 Academic Session on Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 4:00 p.m. in the University Main Auditorium, Akoka .

The Vice-Chancellor, Professor R. A. Bello FAEng will preside over the lecture entitled: Orthodontics in Nigeria, The Journey so far.. . Members of the University of Lagos Community and general public are cordially invited.

Professor Michael Chukwudi Isiekwe was born on September 29, 1950 in Jos, Plateau State. He attended New Bethel College, Onitsha from 1961 to1966 and Edo College, Benin City from 1967 to 1968. He also attended the College of Medicine, University of Lagos from 1969 to 1974 and Queen’s University of Belfast, Northern Ireland from 1976 to 1978.

His academic and professional qualifications include the Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS), Fellowships of the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS), Medical College in Dental Surgery (FMCDS) and Royal College of Surgeons in England (D.Orth.,RCS). He is also a Fellow of West African College of Surgeons and National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria as well as a member of the British Society for the Study of Orthodontics; Nigerian Dental Association and Nigerian Association of Orthodontics.

Professor Isiekwe’s professional and teaching career date back to 1974 when he started his Houseman-ship at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba (LUTH). After completing the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) year as a Dental Surgeon at the Armed Forces Hospital, Yaba from 1975 to 1976, he travelled to Northern Ireland as an Honorary Clinical Postgraduate Student in Orthodontics at the Royal Victoria Hospital, Queen’s University of Belfast.

He joined the services of the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos asSenior Registrar in Orthodontics in the Department of Restorative Dentistry in October 1978. In May 1980, he was promoted to the post of Consultant Orthodontist and appointed Lecturer I in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in October 1983, Associate Professor in November 1989 and Professor in October 1996.

Professor Isiekwe who is currently the Chairman of the CITS Board of the University has served the University in several academic and administrativecapacities including Acting Dean, School of Dental Sciences from October 1990 to October 1993; Acting Head (October 1, 1983 to July 31, 1984 and December 1987 to July 1989) and Head (August 1, 1998 to July 31, 2005) of the Department of Child Dental Health.

He has been a member of Senate from March 1996 to date, Academic Board of the College of Medicine, UNILAG Consult Management Board from March 1986 to date, Medical Education Committee from May 1987 to date, College of Medicine Endowment Committee from June 1987 to date, Advancement Board (2011) and Strategic Planning Committee (2010) among others.

Outside the University of Lagos, Professor Isiekwe has served at various times as Visiting Lecturer and Professor in Orthodontics at the University of Ibadan, University of Benin, University of Nigeria, University of Ghana and University of Leeds (where he was also a Research Fellow). He is an examiner in Orthodontics in the Fellowship Examination of the West AfricanCollege of Surgeons from 1984 to date and National Postgraduate MedicalCollege of Nigeria from 1991 to date as well as external examiner in Orthodontics for Final BDS Examination, University of Port-Harcourt (2011/2012) and University of Ghana from 1994 to 1996.

He has also served as a member of the Governing Council, Federal University of Technology, Akure from February 1997 to August 1999 and Accreditation Team of the National Universities Commission to the University of Ibadan (2006); Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-If (2006); University of Benin, Benin City (2006); University of Nigeria, Nsukka (2009)and Bayero University, Kano (2009). He was also a member of the Accreditation Panel of the West African College of Surgeons to the University of Ibadan in 2008 and University of Benin in 2005 and 2012.

The don who has participated and presented various papers at national and international conferences and workshops, is widely published with over fifty (50) publications to his credit in books, dissertations and learned journals.

He is currently working on six research projects: Bimaxillary Proclination in Nigerians – a Cephalometric Study ; Overbite Values in Nigerians – a Cephalometric Study; Oral and Occlusal Conditions of Young Adult Nigerians with Unrepaired Cleft Lip and Palate; Orthodontic Needs of a Nigerian Population; Comparative analysis of the Cephalometric Values of Nigerians and Caucasians; and A Study of Postgraduate Training in Nigeria .

Professor Isiekwe who is a member of Ikoyi Club of Nigeria and Foundation Club of Nigeria, is a widower with four children.
