Cultists Abduct Three (3) University Students In Akwa Ibom

Latest news from our correspondents in Akwa Jbom State reports that suspected Cultists have Abducted Three (3) University Students In Obong University, Akwa Ibom State.

The three female students of Obong University in Etim Ekpo Local Government Area of the State were abducted in the early hours of Friday from their hostel by armed men.

The gunmen as reported stormed the institution around 12:48am (midnight) on Friday, also reportedly robbed some students, shooting indiscriminately to resist a reprisal from security agents.
One of the abducted students was said to have been shot by the assailants.

The Assistant Registrar of the university, Mr. Edet Etim, said the school had been shut for some months because of the unrest in Obong Ntak.
He said the university’s workers and some members of the community had relocated to other neighbourhoods in the state including Abak and Etim Ekpo.

Etim, who said he was involved in an accident, added that he had been away from the school to receive treatment in a hospital.
He noted that the university was about to reopen fully for academic activities when the gang struck.

He said, “The school was shut in March and has not been fully operational upon resumption due to the trouble from the host communities.

Police spokesperson in the state, Odiko MacDon, who confirmed the incident, said one of the abducted students was however rescued immediately by the police.

Mr MacDon, a deputy superintendent of police, said the rescued student has gunshot wound on her shoulder and has been taken to the hospital for treatment.

“Police is on the trail of the abductors,” the police spokesperson said.
The students in the university embarked on a peaceful march within the campus in the morning to protest the abduction of their colleagues.

They were addressed by the Vice Chancellor, Udoudo Ekanemesang, who appealed to them to remain calm while the incident was being investigated.

The 18-year-old Obong University is one of the two private universities in Akwa Ibom State.
Etim Ekpo, where the university is located, is among the four local government areas mostly affected by cult-related killings and violence in the state.
