ASUP Strike: Lecturers Vow To Continue Strike After NEC Meeting

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has vowed to continue its months-old strike until Federal Government meet its demand.

ASUP president, Chibuzor Asomugha, who told our reporter on phone that the lecturers have decided to continue their strike, said the decision was reached by the National Executive Council of the union Wednesday and that he will give details of decision reached later.

The Polytechnic lecturers went on strike to press home their demand for better teaching and learning environment in the polytechnics, better pay for their members among others.

Just before the last meeting held (on 21st anuary, 2014) between the Federal Government and the Lecturers, polytechnic students accused the lecturers of being selfish with their strike, after which lecturers wondered if they had been invited to be insulted by their students.

Then the ASUP president said the needs assesment committee that was supposed to visit polytechnics to asses the level of decay in the system had not started its work about four month after it was set up because money had been released for its to start its work.

Supervising minister of education, Nyesom Wike, on the other hand said, the government had met all their (ASUP) demand with only salary arreas left unpaid. He said the meeting was to delibrate on how the government will pay the salary arreas.
