UNN’s Power Shift is Irreversible, Cease Protests- Obasi

Its been over a month since the Pro-Chancellor, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, UNN, Dr. Emeka Enejere, was suspended and replaced by the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Nyesom Wike, on behalf of the Federal Government, but, the effects are still largely felt, as members of staff of the University has refused to come to terms with the new management.

Academic and Non-Academic staffs of the University of Nigeria, under the umbrella of the Joint Action Committee(JAC), which comprises of ASUU, NASU, NAAT and others have vowed not to work without the presence of suspended pro-chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere, and have strengthened their stand with series of protests in the Varsity premises, carrying placards and coffins.

According to the spokeperson of the JAC, the staffs demand the return of Dr. Emeka Enejere, and the sack of Vice Chancellor, Prof. Bartho N. Okolo despite his tenure remaining just 5 months, a situation which Obasi. D. C. Chinedu labels as Impossible and Unprogressive.

According to Mr. Obasi. D. C. Chinedu, the decision by the Federal Government to suspend Former pro-chancellor, Dr. Emeka Enejere is final and binding and is irreversible, and urges members of the University to come to terms with the current administration for the betterment of all students of the Institution.

This was confirmed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Supervising Minister of Education, Mr. Simeon Nwakaudu, who said, “the decision to remove and replace the Pro-chancellors of UNN, Dr. Emeka Enejere and Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU), Bauchi, Professor Abdullahi Ango, is sealed, The replacements for Enejere and Ango are already settled and doing what their duty is in their respective Institutions.”

According to the SA to the education Minister, “Their removal was approved by the President, who is the visitor to the institutions, and decides the appointment of the governing council, which has a role that is more of oversight and not the day-to-day running of the Institution. That is the responsibility of the VC.”

Mr. Obasi. D. C. Chinedu calls on all staffs of the University to cease protests, and join hands with the current administration so that, they can take the Institution to greater heights.
