Students of the Federal polytechnic Bauchi, yesterday staged a protest over the continued closure of polytechnics across the country, urging the Federal Government to fulfil the agreement it reached with the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics in 2009.
The students demanded full implementation of the Consolidated Tertiary Institution Salary Structure (CONTISS 15) migration across board, review of the polytechnic act to remove disparity between the Higher National Diploma certificate and the university certificate among others.
President of the Student Union Government, Comrade Abubakar Abdullahi Bako, while addressing newsmen in Bauchi, lamented that the strike has paralysed academic activities in the various campuses across the nation with no positive response from the Federal Government.
Also speaking, one of the union leaders and a Mass Communication student in HND 1, Tsummani John, decried what he described as dichotomy between the university and the polytechnic system of education.
“Polytechnics were created to bring about technological advancement, but universities are given more recognition and priority over polytechnics. We want the Federal Government to find a lasting solution to the problem,” he said.
