FG Please Remember ASUP Strike- Obasi

Less to nothing has been said about the ongoing 3 Months ASUP strike, since the Federal Government agreed to meet 80% of polytechnic Lecturers demands, as revealed by Supervising education minister, Nyesom Wike on Tuesday, 16th December, 2013.

In that statement, Supervising education minister, Mr. Nyesom Wike, highlighted, in a meeting with Committee of Pro-chancellor of Federal Polytechnics, that, theFederal Government would pay the N20.8 billion arrears owed polytechnic staff as soon as the procedure for payment was concluded.

He concluded by saying that, the Federal Government had met over 80%, the demands of the Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), and all that remains, is the release of the white-paper on the implementation of their demands.

It could be remembered, that, ASUP embarked on strike on October 4 after expressing its disappointment at the Federal Government’s reluctance to implement agreed demands.

Having succeeded in meeting the demands of University Lecturers, and bringing an end to one of the longest ASUU strike in the Nation history, VNTI’s Obasi. D. C. Chinedu urges the federal government to extend the same gesture to the polytechnic‘s students who would be celebrating neither the Xmas nor the New year, as a result of the disturbance.

Obasi appeals to the Goodluck Jonathan’s administration, to see to the end of incessant strikes by the education sector, and strive to make Nigerian tertiary institutions the best in Africa and on global standard, having been a part of these at one time in his career.

He also appealed to polytechnic lecturers to increase their efforts in bringing an end to the 3 month impasse, having accused the government of their preference for University education over polytechnic education in Nigeria.

We hope to see a resolution in a short time, and the resumption of academic activities in all federal polytechnics.
