UNILORIN Chapter Of ASUU Honours Prof. Iyayi

Members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), UNILORIN Branch, temporarily suspended academic activities last Wednesday (November 20, 2013) as they held a procession in honour of the former President of the Union, Prof. Festus Iyayi, who died in a road accident on Tuesday, November 12, 2013.

The procession that started at the ASUU Secretariat, University of Ilorin, took the members round the University campus.

The Chairman of the UNILORIN Branch of ASUU, Prof. Wahab Egbewole, thanked participants in the procession for making out time to honour the late Prof. Iyayi, who was the President of the Union between 1986 and 1988.

Prof. Egbewole noted that the late ASUU President discharged his obligations selflessly, adding that “Iyayi did not use the opportunity of the office to serve his selfish interests as some of our leaders do today.”

“Iyayi was indeed a true academic icon; he worked for the union with the last drop of blood in his vein. He was a symbol of the rule of law and a representative of all due process,” Prof. Egbewole pointed out.

In his address, the former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Management Services), Prof. Albert Olayemi, appreciated the unity of the Union in making the procession a success.
Prof. Olayemi praised the late Prof. Iyayi, who, he said, “was never addicted to position of authority.”

In his own remarks, Prof. Babatunde Adeleke of the Department of Statistics said Iyayi suffered and died for ASUU and enjoined everyone who is aware of the inevitability of death to sympathise with Iyayi’s family and th ASUU.

The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Abayomi Omotesho, who expressed his happiness that the procession took place despite all odds, condemned the act of playing politics with death.

The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Dr. Billy Olajide, said that the event was a way of keeping a date with history and recognising the place of history.

Declaring that the late Prof. Iyayi lived and died for unionism, Dr. Olajide commended members of the University of Ilorin, UNILORIN Branch of ASUU for making out time out of their busy schedule to participate in the procession in honour of the departed Union leader.
