Extorting Nature of RSUST, A Concern For The Nation- VNTI

There was a time when Education was very much the Legacy, a time when standard is maintained, and admission is only for the qualified.

A time when you don’t need to spend much to get what’s rightfully yours as a Nigerian Citizen, or Citizen of a Particular state.

A Time when admission or scholarship seeking applicants simply need to walk into the nearby JAMB Office to get and fill their Application forms at no extra cost, sit for exams, View their published results as well as admission lists without spending a dime.

However, much of that has changed today, since education has now become a money spinning venture and a path to Legal extortion of Citizens.

Its now common to see admission forms via JAMB Being sold for increasing prices annually.
Its also common when various Institutions sell the Post Utme Screening forms to cover cost for maintenance of the system.

However, at the Rivers State University of Science and Technology(RSUST), extortion of Nigerian Students has gone beyond simply purchasing post utme scratch cards, or result checking scratch cards as is common today, but up to the extent of students paying to check their own hard earned admission statuses from the University portal.

According to Obasi of VNTI, “it came as a shock to me, when I accessed the University webpage in search of the released 1st list, and found out that, all candidates who applied for admission at the State Funded Institution have to log onto the University Website www.ust.edu.ngand makee-payment of Seven Hundred and Fifty Naira (N750.00)to check their own Admission Status.

This comes after they have poured out Three Thousand, Five Hundred Naira(N3,500) for the Post Utme Screening forms

What a world we live in today.

Also to be noted is that, these applicants, after checking their admission status, Candidates who are offered Provisional Admission should log onto the University Website www.ust.edu.ngand makeAcceptance Fee payment of Twenty-Seven Thousand, Five Hundred & Thirty Naira (N27, 530.00).

How much must a student actually spend in total, to become an Undergraduate of a Nigerian University???

The Rivers State University of Science and Technology(RSUST) is the first Nigerian Institution where prospective students are required to pay to check their admission status, and we believe if not properly checked now, might see other Institutions follow the same pattern in their greed for more money.

In major institutions in Europe, the University sends you a mail/admission letter informing you of your successful application, while here, we have to pay, to check this Status.

We once again, plead with the Rivers State Government, as well as the Federal Government of Nigeria to look into this issue before it becomes a National crisis taking place in all institutions.

Ensure to share this post till it gets to concerned authorities.
