LAGOS State University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) graduated 316 students of 2012 academic sessions. The event served as a forum to foster unity among the graduating students, lecturers, parents and guidance. There were presentations of certificates to the graduating Students indicating that they had successfully completed their programmes. Awards were also given to the best graduating students who perform excellently to emerge best candidates among other studentsin their various Departments. The LUTH year 2012 joint graduation ceremony, organized by the management held at New Great Hall, LUTH Mushin Lagos.
Chief medical Director of the School professor Akin Osibogun said the programme was joint graduation ceremony because the school runs nine different prorammes and decided to graduate all the students at the sametime. “It is joints because we have nine different schools programme, school of health information management, nursing, Medical laboratory Sciences, medical social psychiatric training programmes, among others and we organized it in such a way we would have one graduation ceremony”, he said.
Osibongun disclosed that all the programmes the School runs are accredited, adding that they had challenges of accreditation in the past. “ There are challenges, but we have various regulatory bodies, which regulate training of these professionals, so they would come here on our accreditation. And once they come for accreditation, they want to look at our facilities and the number of the students we are admitting, they want to look at our trainers qualifications and preparations of our trainers. And once they are satisfied, they go ahead and give us permission to go ahead and train these professionals. we have done very well with the regard of this regulatory body and they have given us approval; that is why we are graduating these students, almost all our programmes are accredited”, he said.
Osibogun stated the some of the graduating students have stated to run their postgraduate programmes. “These people we have trained are goingto work in different part of the country, some have gone to post nursing which is a postgraduate programme in different fields of nursing. And all of them are not going to work in LUTH, some would work in other state ofthe federation”, he said.
Osibogun stated the certificates were issued to the students are equivalent to Higher National Diploma (HND), adding that their programmes remain one of the best in the country. “Our training programme remains one of the best teaching training programmes in the country, we have large number of students who wanted to come in. But so far our standard is high we cannot take all of them, the fact that many people wanted come in here it means there is something good in our training programmes and they are all aspiring, there is very tough completion getting into our training programme”.
“In health profession, there so many areas of professionals, the MDS Degree progamme is under the College of Medicine University of Lagos. But the nursing, health information management, progressive nursing, basic dental nursing, Medical social psychiatric, Medical laboratory science training programmes, are under the hospital. And the qualifications they get at the end of the day is equivalent to Higher National Diploma”.
Special guest of honour of the event, professor B. Akande said event wastestimony to LUTH. “LUTH will go on record as the first to commence peri-operative Theatre course in Nigeria. Most of my contemporaries and myself were proud to be associated with the training of pioneers.
Still on nursing, it is pleasant to note that LUTH has also established School of Dental nursing .
Before I left LUTH in 1993, it was the practice to send a senior matron to oversee the activities of the Dental assistants. Now that they have a School of their own, I do hope they are fully registered by the Nigeria Dental Council, as it is the practice in Britain”, he said.
Akande disclosed the nursing candidates are largest and also best among other graduates. “The nurses are largest group of health care professionals. They also form best organised group of the graduates today. In all environments, nursing has a key role in health promotion. Registration nurses do give personal care as well as care planning and documentation and training”.
“However, primary health care system is being seen as the base for new design. The new system is gradually emphasizing preventive and outpatient care as opposed to hospitalization. All levels of care will eventually lead to Community based nursing”, he said.
