NIGERIA’S AMBASSADOR TO US, PROF. ADEFUYE TASKS UNILAG AUTHORITIES!!!

The Ambassador/Head of Mission, Embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria in the United States of America, Professor Adebowale Ibidapo Adefuye has stressed the need for authorities of the University of Lagos(UNILAG) not to rest on their oars but step up activities to ensure the transformation of the institution into a world-class academic citadel.

Professor Adefuye stated this while delivering the Distinguished Lecture of the School of Postgraduate Studies on Friday, December 14, 2012 in the Main Auditorium, Main Campus, Akoka . The lecture was entitled, UNILAG at 50: From Excellence to Distinction – A Roadmap .

He noted that quest for excellence in research and quality teaching should remain the agenda for the fifty-year old institution. His words: “Fifty years is enough time for a University to reassess its progress and determine how far it has gone in fulfilling the objectives of the founding fathers.

From the quality of its graduates, its contributions to national development and the fact of it being the most preferred University in Nigeria, there is some justifications in crediting the University of Lagos with achieving some measure of excellence.

“It will be a serious error for the University to rest on its oars. It is not enough to be the most preferred University in Nigeria. It is necessary to be ranked among the best in the world. UNILAG should stop being a local champion and aspire to be one of the leading contenders for the championship of the world.”

In a brief address, the Vice-Chancellor of the University and Chief Host of the event, Professor R. A. Bello FAEng expressed gratitude to the Chairman of the event, Chief Emeka Anyaoku CON , GCVO , CFR and the Guest Lecturer for honouring the University’s invitation. He also congratulated the Dean and staff of the School of Postgraduate Studies for sustaining the Distinguished Lecture Series which is a constant feature of the school’s academic calendar.

Similarly, the Chairman of the event and former Secretary General of the Commonwealth of Nations, Chief Anyaoku commended the School of Postgraduate Studies for providing a platform for ‘town to meet gown’.

The lecture was attended by dignitaries such as the Proc-Chancellor and Chairman of the University of Lagos’ Governing Council, Deacon (Dr.) Gamaliel O. Onosode OFR , Pro-Chancellor of Lagos State University, Chief Omolade Okoya; principal officers, staff and students of UNILAG.
