What a month it has been for the University of Lagos(UNILAG) as the institution records just another death in a space of 2 weeks.
it was a sad morning, last week saturday at the University of lagos(UNILAG) last two weeks saturday, when the death was announced of their Vice chancellor Professor Babatunde Sofoluwe(now late). Now, two weeks after, on the same day, SATURDAY, same month MAY, same institution, UNILAG, and same cause CARDIAC ARREST popularly known as heart attack.
The death has been announced of a senior lecturer in the department of creative arts, CHIEF E.A. BASSEY who died on saturday morning. According to autopsy reports, suggests that the great icon died of a combination of causes, ranging from, stress, fatigue and Heart attack.
Before his death, Chief E.A Bassey has served the University of Lagos(UNILAG) in various capacities as a senior lecture and a HOD of the department of creative arts.
The sudden death of Chief Bassey suggest that an urgent review of the retirement age of lecturers and civil servants in general is required to prevent such stress and fatigue
You can recall that, few weeks ago, the president of the Federal republic of Nigeria, President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, raised rather than lower the retirement ages of Academic staffs and Non academic staffs on the request of the Academic Staff Union of Universities(ASUU) during their january agreement.
We are still yet to see the extent to which this agreement would affect our professors.
REST IN PEACE, CHIEF E. A. BASSEY
